Rhythm planting project for the World Design Capital year

We did a claim-your-streets kindof planting invasion of 15 000 tulips in the fall of 2011.

The tulips will blossom in  the City of Kauniainen in the spring of World Design Capital year of 2012. .

Our planting session was one of the first  projects of the Design Capital year.

The planting session was public and designed for the people of Kaunainen. We did the concept and organized stuff, the City gardening unit replaced away (for example) eight truckloads of soil, and during two open planting days hundreds of citizens came to turn the bushy Vallmogård hill into a temporary park. The sun was shining, a choir and a jazz band from the Kauniainen music school were playing and we all had a grand time.

The main clou of the planting was that with your own positive deeds you can turn your own city into something a bit more pretty and a bit more your own.

Schoolkids came by. Some with their school, some also after school, and some even on the following day.

If you have names, please drop us a line. They were too fast for us to interview.

We had a tent with refreshments for the planters. We think Kaisa looks quite happy with the buzz.

Anne Charlotte Skogsberg was one of the senior planters. She did quite a few square meters of planting.

And Reijo Henrik Haltman came by as our first planter, before any of the official planting sessions were on their way. With Reijo we discussed planting, fishing and enduro bikes.

The city garndner Emmi Silvennoinen has stamina, let it be known. While the young blokes with shovels wore out, Emmi dug into the muddy soil ignoring her high fevers. BOTH respects!

Here are the hands of our second planter, Kirsi Salonen.

The muddy reality of garndening. Freda the Digger dug out eight truckloads of soil.

Here’s Eeva Kaisa Berry marking the Vallmogård hill for Freda the Digger. You can see the Kauniainen train station in the back.

Here’s how we envision it’ll look like.

And here’s a press release (in Finnish):
