T3

T3 stands for the three T’s of Science, Art and the Economy (in Finnish: ‘Tiede’, ‘Taide’ and ‘Talous’). It is an area in Espoo within the triangle of Tapiola, Otaniemi and Keilaniemi. There the companies, universities, the city and the people work and openly collaborate together to find the best solutions to everything from town planning, living, recreation, global issues, the future of entrepreneurship and a sustainable way of life. You name it. These new solutions and this new approach will benefit all of Finland and even the world.

In the coming years, the area will see a further EUR 5 billion in investments. The T3 area will become more attractive, pleasant and functional. The walk and cycle routes between Otaniemi, Keilaniemi and Tapiola will improve once the motorways crossing the area are built over and moved underground. The Western Metro underground extension will connect the area to central Helsinki. It will be impressive.

From the design and communications point of view the T3 is an open, organically developing initiative, project and journey with no clearly defined workflow, goal or destination. The T3 brand will be developed through actions. We will let the visual applications of the T3 brand rise out of its individual content using the most suitable and highest quality methods available. All of the applications, with their potentially varied visual outlooks, will serve as opportunities for T3 project staff and BOTH to broadly experiment with new solutions, changing the method and direction of the work as needed. The work has begun. This will be one awesome ride.

The hand-outs presented here are two different appearances of two different elevator speeches for T3. This was done in close collaboration with our dear and most talented affiliate Avaja Open. More T3 on its way, stay tuned.

Selkämeri National Park

The third stamp in a series portraying Finnish National Parks is from Selkämeri. With this one we were lucky to get to work with a marine biologist/scuba diver Heidi Arponen, who took the lower part of the stamps picture. And, yes, it is a collage.

Technology Academy Finland and Millennium Technology Prize

BOTH has been the selected design partner of Millennium Technology Prize from the early days of the prize. This year we have been busy combining the visual identity of the Millennium Technology Prize with the identity of Technology Academy. Both prevoiusly designed by BOTH. Here is what we have done:

Technology Academy Finland awards the Millennium Technology Prize biannually. The Grand Prize winner of 2012 will be announced on 13th of june. You can read more about the awarded laureates from TAF’s website.

Talouselämä

The iconic Talouselämä magazine went through a thorough redesign. The creative director Teemu Lehtosalo asked us to rethink the Talouselämä logo. The size of the magazine got smaller, but the presence of the logo in the cover got a lot bigger. The brand presence in the digital applications was reinforced accordingly.

Vindirekt Finland

Vindirekt asked us to create a new concept to promote their selected contemporary line of products. The visuals spring from the industrialism of the urban Suvilahti (where Vindirekt office is located) and from the rural roots of wine making.

Espoon keskus

Espoo wanted to promote Espoon keskus (Espoo center) in their stakeholder magazine. Espoon keskus area has a lot to offer, however the first impression upon arrival to the railwaystation tells you very different. This dilemma led us to design a more justified story for Espoon keskus. The concept of the supplement and visuals are ours. The communications agency Cocomms wrote the texts. Here’s what came out:

Metsä Groupin Viesti

Metsäliitto Group restructured its organization. They now call themselves simply Metsä Group. The brand redesign was artdirected by Petteri Järvelin from SekGrey. Metsä Group’s Viesti magazine (has been under our wings in different forms since 2006), needed to be redesigned accordingly. BOTH was asked to convert the corporate brand elements to magazine design tools. The newly designed brand typography, colours and brand elements were applied consistently to Viesti magazine.

Finnoo

Finnoo area in southern Espoo will offer homes to some 20 000 people. The area will be Espoo’s the most urban and the most densely populated spot of land (some 400 hectares) directly connected to the baltic sea and wildlife of Espoo.

BOTH was the key partner in communications strategy and branding work. We also did the slogan work, visual identity, graphic guidelines and office applications needed.

The Finnoo project is setting an example in how area devopment and building should be and will be executed in the future. The people should be and will be listened and heard through out the process. Finnoo project started out with extensive workshops with a group of Finnoo intrest groups that laid down the cornerstones of the Finnoo vision. That work is an on-going process. There will also be tools for the common man to share, develop and execute their own ideas and dreams about living, housing, all the essentials of happy life. BOTH has a big role in that too, but we will talk about that a bit later on. For starters, here’s few pics of the visual part:

Hyvä terveys

Hyvä terveys from Sanoma Magazines was redesigned from head to heal. BOTH was called in to redesign the Hyvä terveys logo and to help the art director Leena Majaniemi develop a typographic tone of voice needed to lift the magazine to the next level. The collaboration between HT and BOTH team was succesful. First magazines out have been welcomed with a favour.
