Finnoo area in southern Espoo will offer homes to some 20 000 people. The area will be Espoo’s the most urban and the most densely populated spot of land (some 400 hectares) directly connected to the baltic sea and wildlife of Espoo.

BOTH was the key partner in communications strategy and branding work. We also did the slogan work, visual identity, graphic guidelines and office applications needed.

The Finnoo project is setting an example in how area devopment and building should be and will be executed in the future. The people should be and will be listened and heard through out the process. Finnoo project started out with extensive workshops with a group of Finnoo intrest groups that laid down the cornerstones of the Finnoo vision. That work is an on-going process. There will also be tools for the common man to share, develop and execute their own ideas and dreams about living, housing, all the essentials of happy life. BOTH has a big role in that too, but we will talk about that a bit later on. For starters, here’s few pics of the visual part:

Hyvä terveys from Sanoma Magazines was redesigned from head to heal. BOTH was called in to redesign the Hyvä terveys logo and to help the art director Leena Majaniemi develop a typographic tone of voice needed to lift the magazine to the next level. The collaboration between HT and BOTH team was succesful. First magazines out have been welcomed with a favour.

Envisioning information is a project under the World Design Capital Helsinki sphere. BOTH was asked to jump in to the band wagon to link different components of the together and to make a TA-DAA-campaign out of it. We also tutored all the visualizations and developed them together with the information graphic designers.

We also did two visuals of our own. It’s a really cool service giving you loads of open data of Helsinki for free. If you’re into envisioning information, check it out.)… and created a concept for school kids to help them map down information central to their lives. The case was about how hair styles corresponded with the bands the kids listened to and how that corresponds where in the class room they were seated. Tougher the music further back at the room they sit. That ancient rule has not changed.

Thanks Katja Lindroos and Totti Terinkoski from the Idealist, and especially Laura Aalto and Kaarina Gould from WDC. This was a fun ride.

The Finnish Academy of Technology, TTA (Teknillisten Tieteiden Akatemia) asked us to bring their emblem up to date. The old emblem dates back to 1957. The academy is very traditional, exclusive and academic. The redesign conveys these premises. The core elements remained the same. Their treatment is very different shifting the emphasis away from a tangible cogwheel to more conceptual symbol of technical sciences.

The preliminary brochure work we did for the City of Hyvinkää continued with a full brand work, including a sub-brand for the up-and-coming Metsäkalteva housing area.

In the process we re-did the Hyvinkää logo, colors, type, tone-of-voice, slogan, what-you-haves and brand imagery which were unconventionally hand-drawn by Vesa Sammalisto to convey the right atmosphere. The Metsäkalteva brand was designed to be Hyvinkää’s little sister. Or brother. Or both, since Hyvinkää is especially covetable by families. Not to mention businesses, of course.

Now Hyvinkää can communicate all the best it is – the best slow-paced comfortable city in the un-congested metropolitan area. The best of nature, the best of activities, the best of culture. And all a bicycle ride away.

Our strategist-in-companion in the Hyvinkää process was Tarja Heija, who did the preliminary tone-of-voice and the slogan for Hyvinkää.

Here’s an example of the Hyvinkää mark and the Metsäkalteva mark, derived from the Hyvinkää whole. What you see is a gift-wrapped (just like in the Visitor’s guide) brochure about the up-and-coming Metsäkalteva area. It has Hyvinkää on the cover and Metsäkalteva following. The texts in the brocure were done by copywriter Juha-Pekka Honkanen from our networks.

Vesa’s illustrations in use. And the tone-of-voice for those who know Finnish.

The design is easily applied to different uses.

We did a claim-your-streets kindof planting invasion of 15 000 tulips in the fall of 2011.

The tulips will blossom in the City of Kauniainen in the spring of World Design Capital year of 2012. .

Our planting session was one of the first projects of the Design Capital year.

The planting session was public and designed for the people of Kaunainen. We did the concept and organized stuff, the City gardening unit replaced away (for example) eight truckloads of soil, and during two open planting days hundreds of citizens came to turn the bushy Vallmogård hill into a temporary park. The sun was shining, a choir and a jazz band from the Kauniainen music school were playing and we all had a grand time.

The main clou of the planting was that with your own positive deeds you can turn your own city into something a bit more pretty and a bit more your own.

Schoolkids came by. Some with their school, some also after school, and some even on the following day.

If you have names, please drop us a line. They were too fast for us to interview.

We had a tent with refreshments for the planters. We think Kaisa looks quite happy with the buzz.

Anne Charlotte Skogsberg was one of the senior planters. She did quite a few square meters of planting.

And Reijo Henrik Haltman came by as our first planter, before any of the official planting sessions were on their way. With Reijo we discussed planting, fishing and enduro bikes.

The city garndner Emmi Silvennoinen has stamina, let it be known. While the young blokes with shovels wore out, Emmi dug into the muddy soil ignoring her high fevers. BOTH respects!

Here are the hands of our second planter, Kirsi Salonen.

The muddy reality of garndening. Freda the Digger dug out eight truckloads of soil.

Here’s Eeva Kaisa Berry marking the Vallmogård hill for Freda the Digger. You can see the Kauniainen train station in the back.

Here’s how we envision it’ll look like.

And here’s a press release (in Finnish):

Juhani Aho was an author of many skills – the first Finnish professional author, a journalist and a translator, whose books were sold also on the international markets. Aho wrote about Finnish nature, national issues, women’s position and that of the working class. Aho is considered to have created the foundation for modern Finnish prose and is one of our national authors.

Our interpretation of Aho consentrated on his work as a journalist and his love for nature.

The stamp was printed with several spot inks and finished off with plate printing, leaving a dent on the paper.

The Finnish mobile and internet operator DNA turned 10. For the occasion DNA did a survey on Finnish media consumption. The survey was published as a pocket sized booklet. BOTH was asked to come up with a thoughtful solution to seamlessly combine the very pink consumer oriented DNA brand with the ceremoniality related to the occasion. Here is what came out.
